Recruitment News

August 19, 2011

Summer has been a busy time for fire recruitments....some winding down and others just starting or in progress.

Vancouver Fire Rescue is finishing up its second round of interviews this week and The NorthShore Recruitment has finished step 1 in their process, or it could be looked at as  step 2 with shortlisted candidates writing  the test this past Wednesday August 17th.

Just received news of a recruitment for Volunteer Firefighters in the Whatcom County Fire District 5 - Point Roberts.  That is a great opportunity for candidates wanting to join up with a department that has been moving forward this past year.

Langley City's  recruitment for 2 firefighter positions is in progress and is also looking for paid on call firefighters.

Its also been busy with BC Sheriffs, Corrections BC and Corrections Canada recruitments which are continuing.

The RCMP and some Municipal Departments are making plans for additional hirings in the fall.

My first Blog

The biggest influential change I see with the launch of my Website is the growth of Web 2.  This new media has changed the landscape for life.

It's an exciting time for learning, connecting and utilizing this new technology.  If you are not savvy in this technology my advice is to get on board or you will be left behind.

Don't stress over learning the 'how tos', put your emphasis on the 'what if's'.

Social media is not going away, it is not a fad and it is not just about chat or on-line connections.  Traditional media and its reach has changed dramatically.

What does this mean to you and your career search?  It means - don't underestimate its reach.  For the first time, I have seen a firefighter recruitment utilizing Facebook (the City of Port Coquitlam).  This shift in using social media to attract candidates means you and your brand are noticeable and visible to employers.  Their first glimpse of you may come from not just the resume and your application but from your on-line presence.

There are some simple rules to follow.  This wisdom comes from Sital Ruparelia, of 6FigureCareerManagement.com, he says you need to follow the basic principles of being 'real'. Thus:

1.  Be respectful

2.  Be Transparent

3.  Be of Value

4.  Be Nice

5.  Be a Connector

6.  Be Different (by being your true self)

These little rules of life are hopefully ones you already know and use in your daily affairs.  Remember them.  You can learn and adapt to the new technology and media platforms but these rules when followed, will be instrumental in your career success.
